Table tennis champions Will Bayley and Ross Wilson

We are very proud to support British Paralympian Table Tennis Champions Will Bayley and Ross Wilson.

Our sponsorship journey with Will and Ross began in 2011 and, since then, we have watched their journey and admired their development and determination as both young men and as athletes in a competitive sports environment on the world stage.

Will Bayley

Will Bayley

International debut: 2006
Para TT class: 7

Born with arthrogryposis, a rare congenital disorder that affected all four of his limbs, Will underwent numerous operations at Great Ormond Street Hospital from the age of three months old.

He returned to Great Ormond Street for chemotherapy when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of seven and it was while recovering from cancer that his grandmother bought him a table tennis table. The rest, as they say, is history. Will won his first major title at the European Championships in 2011 then took silver in London 2012 and followed that by becoming World champion in 2014 and Paralympic champion in 2016.

In December 2016 Will was awarded the Bill McGowran Trophy for ‘outstanding achievement in Paralympic sport by a male athlete’ by the Sports Journalists Association and he received an MBE in the New Year Honours List. He reclaimed the World number one ranking in men’s class 7 in 2019 after winning tournaments in Italy, Slovenia and Japan and later that year won the hearts of the nation as a contestant on BBC TV’s Strictly Come Dancing.

He recovered from a serious knee injury to compete in Tokyo in 2021 and in his first tournament for two years took silver in the men’s class 7 singles and silver in the men’s class 6-7 team event.

Ross Wilson

Ross Wilson

International debut: 2011
Para TT class: 8

Ross first played table tennis while on holiday at Center Parcs and a watching member of staff, noting the Arsenal shirt he was wearing, christened him the Thierry Henry of table tennis.

His natural skill brought him success in able bodied table tennis and as a junior he was ranked in the top ten in the country, winning two National doubles titles. However, as he got older it became clear that some physical problem was affecting his development and in 2011 he was diagnosed with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, which affects the growing ends of the bones.

Ross won bronze in the men’s class 6-8 team event in London 2012 at the age of just 17 and overcame a series of injuries and two years out of the sport to qualify for Rio 2016 and take bronze again in the men’s class 6-8 team. In April 2018 he won gold in the men’s class 6-10 singles at the Commonwealth Games in Australia and in October 2018 became World champion after beating the double Paralympic champion from China in the final. He competed in his third Paralympic Games in Tokyo and took bronze in the men’s class 8 team event with Aaron McKibbin and Billy Shilton.

"In my development and progress to date, I have been given the opportunity to work and compete against the best juniors at the most prestigious competitions in the world such as the Junior Orange Bowl and Wimbledon!

"My upcoming goals are to start playing on the professional women's tour and contest to win the Junior National Championships. As for the long term, I aspire to be number one in the world and make a living playing tennis.

"If not for Atrium’s support I would not be able to take up many of the opportunities provided to me at this crucial time in my tennis journey. I am so thankful and extremely appreciative of this opportunity Atrium has granted me."

Lloyd's Patriotic Fund

The Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund

Founded in 1803 to assist the many casualties of the Napoleonic Wars, the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund is one of the oldest military charities of its kind and has been providing support to the armed forces community on behalf of the Lloyd’s market for over two hundred years.

Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund provides support to a number of organisations with a particular focus on those who are disabled or face poverty, illness and hardship.

In 2014 Atrium became a Friend of the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund along with eight other Lloyd’s affiliated firms.

At a recent gathering we heard from recipients of grants. An impressive career soldier narrated his story, losing his sight not through accident or combat, but a medical illness. The support of his colleagues and Commanding Officer was important ….. but the army marches on. He was the recipient of specialist help from Blind Veterans UK who enable ex-Service men and women to discover a life beyond sight loss, which has been supported by the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund.
